To a natural horizon - ie no hills in the way - how far is the horizon - in miles please?

How far away the horizon is depends on the height your eyes are at. A taller person will be able to see farther than a short person, and a person at the top of a building or other tall object will be able to see much much farther.

For a person of average height standing in a featureless field (i.e. the ocean) the horizon would be about 3 miles away.

This website: http://www.boatsafe.com/tools/horizon.ht... will give you the distance to the horizon based on your height.

to the average person in height, the horizon is 20 miles away. Report It

Horizon is where earth meets the sky. So, I will have to say at least as far as the radius of earth (3,960 Miles).
7 miles
The distance to the horizon in miles is approximately the 1.2 times the square root of your height of eye in feet. E.g. standing on a boardwalk 16 ft high gives a distance to the horizon of 4.8 miles.

You have a right triangle with hypoteneuse (R + H) and a leg of R. Where R is the radius of the Earth and H is the height of eye. Apply Pythagoras to it and with everything in the same units, you can get the approximation above.
Jai Guru can see halfway around the world. What an idiot.
