means its not final, its open to public for testing :)
Beta means test version.
Beta means the program is still new and they are testing it for bugs and other problems. When the testing phase is over it will no longer be called beta

BETA usually means "pre-live". It's the last phase of testing before launching the live (final) version. Although in technology, nothing is really ever 'final' !!

It's always "Beta" in some respects!!
Beta testing is when the software company asks volunteers to use the program and help them with feedback in the design and debugging. I did some beta testing for IBM on word processing back in the very old days: The Mag Card II handbook was full of my ideas. For free. No pay. Sometimes a mention in the "thanks" page of the manual.

Sometimes beta testers do get paid though ... eventually.
Beta is a pre-release or the full or final version of a product. It gives the developers time to fully test their product to users like us. It also helps the developers to work out the bugs their product may have and fix them before they release the final version

A Beta version of software is a version where the program is pretty much finished and working, but might still have some bugs that need to be fixed. When a program is "in beta" it usually means it's being tested to make sure it's all working right.

In case you were wondering there is also an Alpha phase, where the program is pretty much finished in that it does everything it's supposed to do, however it may have alot of bugs, not be using all of the right assets (graphics, sound effects etc) and have some minor features not yet implemented.
